The kids and I drove to Regina on Friday, July 10. It is always a long drive but the kids do well and I appreciate the divided highway and singing along to tunes to help the drive pass. We made it in time to get the kids to bed after some supper and watch the Rider game which was part of my plan from the beginning.
Saturday was Kirra's Rider cheer camp and the weather was HOT. It was +30 with the sun shining bright. A little too hot for an afternoon of cheering on the field of Mosaic but Kirra had a great time. After dropping Kirra off, Jaret, my parents, and I went down to the Farmer's Market on Scarth Street. It was a great market with so many fresh fruits and veggies and homemade Saskatoon Berry Pie. After getting some necessities for supper (pie included), we went and had lunch at a pub on Scarth before we headed back to Mosaic to watch all the cheerleaders perform. It was so adorable to watch them all. The older ones did some stunts and tumbling while the younger ones just danced around. After the cheer camp and little performance they put on for parents, we were to go down to field level to get our cheerleader and could take some pics. Gainer the Gopher also made an appearance which was fun.
Jaret and Kirra made some new friends, Aiden and Addison live across the street from my parents. Taylor and Emma are also friends that Kirra always likes to play with when she visits Grandma and Grandpa's. The kids had fun riding bikes, playing at the park or in each other's yards, jumping on the trampoline and some time on the slip n' slide. Having some friends around helped pass the time and made visiting even more fun for the kids. The kids were excited that we even went to Boomer's Air Park this time - an indoor trampoline facility so that they could jump around to their heart's content.
Mid-week the kids and I drove up to Saskatoon. We had lunch with my Grandma and had a nice visit. We then spent the afternoon at Kelli's in the pool. Sandra and Andrea also met us there with their kids for the afternoon. The weather was great and it was wonderful to be able to catch up with my girlfriends. We then met Geoff and Nettie for supper at Fudd's and the kids played a round of mini-golf before we drove home. It was a quick trip there and back but we managed to fit in lots of fun.
Thursday my Grandma Mary drove to Regina to have supper and we were thankful for the visit with her. It was short but always so good to see her. Lisa and Justine also had supper with us that night. The kids enjoyed the time they got to spend with Justine during our visit. I managed to snap a pic of the kids with Grandma before she left but they were already in pjs. I unfortunately didn't get any pics with Lis and Justine.
Friday we took the kids to the minion movie and they thought it was hilarious. After supper it was time for the Rider game and Kirra's cheerleading at half-time. Kirra and I sat together while Jaret sat with my parents. I managed to get a pic of Kirra before the rain but didn't get pics of Jaret or my parents. I know, right? Something must be wrong that I wasn't constantly snapping pictures.
The weather did not cooperate well as an hour before game time it cooled off and started raining. The reports were for light or scattered showers. However, the rain came and was heavy and constant which made for a cold and wet game. This didn't 'dampen' Kirra's spirits though. In fact, after her cheering at half time she came running off the field holding hands with one of the cheerleaders with the biggest smile on her face. She exclaimed to me that she had so much fun and even loved being able to dance and cheer in the rain. I love her enthusiasm and positive outlook! Earlier in the week, we weren't sure she would be able to cheer. She had jumped off the trailer bed in my parent's driveway and turned over on her ankle. The next morning it was quite swollen. I took her to a doctor, the doctor suggested an x-ray. However, in the end it was just a sprain and of course that doesn't slow her down with all her energy.
Rather than driving home Saturday (after the late night of Friday), we decided to stay an extra day. That meant we could relax and take it easy on Saturday. It also meant a night to finally have a fire and roast marshmallows. I remember a couple of years ago where Kirra was scared of the fire and wouldn't come near it. She likes sitting by the fire now but still prefers her marshmallows not toasted over the coals. Jaret has become a pro at roasting marshmallows and like me, doesn't like when they get burned.
While in Regina, my Dad spent some time with Jaret getting him set up with a top and bottom retainer. Jaret was excited about this and although it was difficult to get used to the first couple of days, he was a trooper and wore it as much as he could. Now he is wearing them 24/7 and only takes them out to brush his teeth and the appliances as well. I am so proud of him!
Kirra did not visit the dental office on this trip and was disappointed that her friend Kristin (dental hygienist) was on holidays. This is how the conversation went:
Kirra: Grandpa, when do I get to come to the office and see Kristin?
Grandpa: Kristin is on holidays this week so you won't get to see her.
Kirra: But I wanted to see her and get a prize.
Grandpa: What do you mean, get a prize?
Kirra: Well, if I visit the dental office and because I lost my first tooth, I should get a prize and Kristin always gives me a prize when I see her.
Grandpa: Didn't the Tooth Fairy come and visit when you lost your tooth?
Kirra: Yeah, but she only gave me money and money doesn't matter much to me.
And that was our time in Regina. It was great to spend time with family and I felt grateful for the relaxation and downtime. I enjoyed being able to get out for some running, despite one encounter with a rather aggressive dog who was not on a leash. My running has been in a bit of a slump and I have been a little unmotivated but I did love running while in SK. It was the small things - the beauty of the sky, the quiet, the dragonflies above, and the weather when I ran (the mornings were warm and sunny and the evening runs were just the right temperature). It was great to visit but just as good to get home after being gone for over a week. And I was wanting to get home and see what Terry had accomplished on the "Honey Do List." Pics of the garage and the work he did will follow in a later post.
