The Zoo

What a beautiful weekend! The weather was perfect for a trip to the zoo on Saturday. The sun was shining, there was no wind and we finally had some warm temperatures. Jaret was so excited as it had been about a year since we had been to the zoo. On the way there we sang, "We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo..." Jaret loves to sing and lately has been making up his own songs that make no sense whatsoever. Once we got there, Jaret hopped into the stroller and I carried Kirra in the sling. We didn't plan to see everything as we bought a season pass so that we could go more often and for shorter periods. We find that if we try to do too much, it is too much not only on Jaret but on Terry and I as well.
Jaret enjoyed seeing all the different animals. He liked the lions and thought it was cool when he heard the male lion roar as he walked around his enclosure. He also really liked how tall the giraffes were. We checked out the koala but seeing one doesn't compare to actually holding one (we'll have to let Jaret experience that in Australia one day). We also walked through the rainforest and spent quite a bit of time watching the gorillas. One gorilla was trying to get his bed ready for a nap and he kept trying to shake out the blanket and lay it out, over and over again. But Jaret's favourite thing about the zoo wasn't the animals at all but the huge play structure. It was hard to keep track of him as he was climbing all over the place. After awhile, we saw that he had made a friend. He was playing with a boy who was probably around 9, named Elijah. This boy was so kind and really took to Jaret. Elijah played with him the whole time and helped Jaret on things that he wouldn't have been able to do on his own. Jaret really liked his new friend and didn't want to leave. Terry actually climbed up and surprised Jaret, as a means of getting him down so we could go home. I know that Jaret will be asking to go to the zoo a lot this summer to play on this play structure! I just worry as to how I will get him to leave when the time comes.
Other than that, our weekend was pretty quiet. As the one picture of Kirra and I shows - we fell asleep together one evening on the couch and had a great little nap! And Sunday I was on my own with the kids as Terry was golfing in Radium with some guys from work.
