I am so thankful that my children attend a school where they can learn about their faith in every facet of their learning. We have taught our kids about the true meaning of Easter from a young age but sometimes you wonder if with all the other fun stuff (Easter treats and decorating Easter eggs), do they really understand what Easter is truly about. But, I do believe my children know and I am certain that as they mature, they will understand it on a deeper level.
Kirra came home from school in the days leading up to Spring Break with lots of tidbits of new knowledge she had learned about the Easter story. One day specifically, when Grandma Sheila came over, she told her about Judus and that she didn't like him very much because he was the one who led the soldiers to Jesus to arrest him. She and Grandma Sheila had a cute little conversation about this and Grandma Sheila assured her that Judus felt shame for doing what he did for such a small amount of money. With learning about the Easter story, Kirra decided she needed to illustrate it and then give it to others. Here is Kirra's Easter story that she gave to Grandma Laura.
The first picture has the soldiers with happy faces as they arrested Jesus, notice the crown of thorns.
"A twisted crown of thorns was placed on his head and a purple robe draped over his shoulders as the crowd struck Him in the face and mocked God's Son." ~John 19:1-3
I can't even imagine the torment that Jesus went through as he was tortured and the pain He bore even prior to the ultimate suffering.
I cant imagine the agony he bore as He was led, carrying the heavy wooden cross, up the hill, to His death. The agony of the nails to flesh.
"Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem." ~Isaiah 53:3
The second picture of Kirra's Easter Story tells of Jesus' crucifixion on the cross. She points out to that he has a sad face and he has blood on him because that was what it really would have been like for him on the cross.
And then IT IS FINISHED. Jesus had died for our transgressions. By His wounds, we are healed.
The third picture is Jesus' body in the tomb. I like how Kirra drew the tomb and laid Jesus body so void of life at the bottom of the tomb.
Good Friday - my children really question why it is called Good Friday. Good Friday brings DEATH and it would be anything but good if we didn't know the full story...
The final picture tells of his resurrection as the tomb is empty, the stone rolled away.
Sunday, Easter Sunday brought LIFE.
He is risen! He is risen, indeed!
My heart overflows at the sacrifice. My heart swells with the weight of God's love that He scarified His one and only son to dies for my iniquities. I am humbled. I am forever grateful. I praise you Heavenly Father for this gift, given so freely and with such grace.
I love how excited Kirra gets about learning about these aspects of her Christian faith. Over Spring Break, she and Jaret began watching some videos on RightNow Media about the Easter story. I loved that they were watching videos with depth and substance that could open up conversation about what we believe and why.
I traveled with the kids and my Auntie Lee (and Mighty) to Regina for Easter. My Auntie Kirsten, Rob, and Grandma Mary also joined us at my parents place for the weekend. We enjoyed one another's company and just being together as family. We played many games of Jenga and Uno. My Dad needed to keep reminding me of the rules as I guess I was using Calgary rules, or so he said. We did some karaoke with Justine and Racquel - we may not have sounded great but we sang with heart. And I think we rocked some of the songs. We decorated Easter eggs. We took some selfless, but don't worry Auntie Kirsten, I won't share any of those. And of course we ate lots, shared lots of laughs, some tears, and the kids enjoyed their Easter egg hunt.
The kids had cleanings and Kirra is showing off her ring that says, "Look Mom no cavities."
Check-ups actually happened in the massage chair at my parents place. Jaret will be starting ortho in the not so distant future.
Racquel with her roommate and friend, Lydia.
Preparing for the Easter Meal
Kirra adores Racquel and loved that Racquel even painted her fingernails for her.
The Easter Bunny (aka - Grandma Laura) left a trail of eggs down the stairs.
Kirra with Great Grandma Mary - learning a little bit about her Ukrainian culture.
Kirra and Jaret wrote notes to take to Ayden's gravesite.
