Ninth Birthday

We have a nine year old in the house - only a year away from double digits. Jaret was counting down the days until his birthday. He was mostly excited but at one point made a comment that he didn't want to get older because he was scared about turning twelve in case he died in his sleep like his cousin.  Moments like that just break my heart.
We celebrated Jaret's birthday with supper at Montana's. A tradition of so many kids who love to wear the horns. The Tysdal family joined us for supper and all the kids took turns wearing the horns - quite the novelty.
Jaret's birthday party was on Friday where he invited some friends from school and a friend from the neighbourhood.  It is always a hard decision inviting friends because he would like to invite many more.  He always jokes that he will invite Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2...Grade 12 - just like the Robert Munsch book.
We had a magician come in for his birthday.  Kirra and her friend really liked him.  And the boys didn't mind him but they were trying to figure out his tricks and were a little skeptical.  Jaret was excited to get a book with magic tricks as a gift from the magician.
The minion themed birthday went well but I was exhausted after the magician, pizza and cake, and movie/play time and we still had a sleepover with two of Jaret's friends.  I was ready to fall asleep before they were and once they finally did fall asleep, I went to bed.
It was nice to have my parents here again for the weekend.  Dad had a study course on Friday so they were able to share in the chaos of Jaret's birthday party. Even though I find the parties a lot of work, I know they create memories for our kids.  Now to start simplifying the birthday parties once Jaret hits double digits.  Although I want to create memories for my kiddos, I see that birthday parties are getting a little out of control.  I just read on a friend's facebook page about someone advertising throwing birthday parties for children that includes goody bags, prep, and clean-up for the birthday child and nine of their closest friends for the low price of $1200. Yikes - the goody bags better be as good as the gifts given out at the Oscars.  I agree it is time to simplify!
Happy Birthday, Jaret! I am blessed to be your mom and I am so grateful for you each day. You are intelligent, have a witty sense of humour, are caring and compassionate, and I love that you still give cuddles freely. You are such a precious gift and I am thankful that we can celebrate you. Praying for God's richest blessings as you turn nine and in the year ahead as you continue to grow into the boy God wants you to be. I love you to the moon and back, infinity x infinity!

Only one candle was left so I guess Jaret has one girlfriend.  Teehee.
