My Poet

Last week, Jaret's school had a Poetry Reading.  Kirra and I went and listened to the poems that the Grade 1-4 students had to share.  I loved being a part of this special day where all the students were able to showcase their work.  It made me miss being in the classroom a bit though, I must admit.  The students had been working on a poetry unit for a month and this was the culmination to all that hard work.  It was great seeing the kids, some who were taken quite a bit out of their comfort zone, get up and share in front of their peers and the parents.  It was special to be there to encourage Jaret for a job well done.

He recited a poem called God Is...

After the poetry reading, the students were able to bring their books home with them.  That night, Jaret read all of his poems, first to me and then to Dad.  The poem Jaret shared for the poetry reading was my favourite but I also liked one entitled, "Popcorn" and another called, "I Wish."  When he read me that one he told me that some of the wishes will probably be my wishes too.

I Wish
By Jaret
I wish I had a puppy
And I could play with it all day.
I wish I could live in Maui
And in the ocean I would play.
I wish I had one billion dollars
And could buy a plane.
I wish I had a baby brother
And I could give him a candy cane.

It was wonderful just cuddling next to him having him read me his poems.  At the beginning of the poetry unit, he shared he didn't really like poetry but with the pride he had in his work at the end, I think he doesn't mind poetry as much any longer.  Moments like this make me so thankful for the opportunity to be a mom.  So grateful for these precious moments.
