Goodbyes

Goodbyes are never easy. It may have helped that our kids knew that it was only for the summer but tonight as they said their goodbyes, it was still a little tough on them...and my heart felt heavy for the goodbye.

Jaret and Kirra were so excited and leading up to the end of the school year and kept asking when our friends from Spain were "moving" back. Then while on our trip in Seattle, we got the text that they had returned to Calgary and couldn't wait to see us. Kirra especially was over the moon as she loves having friends in our neighbourhood to play with. And throughout the summer, they all played as much as they could.

Ian is Jaret's age but much taller. Dan and Violetta are twins that are a couple years younger than Kirra. The wonderful thing is how well they all play together. I went over to Gema's one evening to retrieve the kids when it was getting late and they weren't yet home. Gema told me that they aren't coming home and that she wants them to stay because she loves my kids and how well they all get along. It was late that night and after the trampoline and playing Hide & Seek, I saw the kids just hanging out on the couch, almost asleep.

One afternoon I went outside in the backyard and Jaret and Ian had set up a game of Monopoly on the deck because it was so nice outside but they needed a break from biking and throwing the baseball around. Kirra was across the street on the trampoline with Dan and Violetta with the sprinkler - what better fun to have on a hot summer day. All these small moments that make up what it means to have neighbourhood friends and just enjoy summer.

But as summer comes to an end and we have fallen back into the routine of fall, it was time to say goodbye - goodbye to summer and goodbye to our friends from Spain. But only for a little while as we are hoping that they will be back at Christmas this year and I think that is already on Kirra's prayer list.

Dan didn't make it into the pictures as he was being a little shy
and perhaps a little sad over going back to Spain.

Goodbye friends - until we meet again...
