Basketball - Jaret's team has gone undefeated so far this season. They are playing well as a team and really growing their skill level. This last weekend, Jaret played a team from Okotooks and it was really a good match and a very close game. It was also pretty stressful with some intense kids on the other team and some not great refereeing. But in the end they won 23-19 and will continue their season after Christmas. The break will be nice.
Diving - Jaret only has a week left before a new diving session will begin. He continues to love jumping off the 10M but is also trying to learn more technique with his dryland training and building his core. His bravery continues to amaze me.
Dancenastics and Baking keep Kirra busy on Tuesday and Wednesday after school. She is making some friends in her dance class which makes it easier for her to want to go. Since she started this dance year, she hasn't been enjoying it as much and I think it is mostly because of not having close friends in her class. Baking on the other hand is full of familiar faces, including her friend Kaycee. Kirra enjoys putting on her apron and baking with the chef each week.
We are beginning some of the fun of December. Recently we had Kaycee and her sister Kaitlyn over and they decorated gingerbread cookies. Their favourite part (aside from eating all the candy as they decorated, the evidence is clear in their smiles) was putting as many sprinkles on as possible.
This past week was more busy than most. After Jaret's basketball game on Saturday we drove out to Banff for the night. We walked around the shops and the kids each chose a Christmas ornament from The Spirit of Christmas store before we found a spot on main street to watch The Santa Parade. It was a nice little parade and some of the floats were even walking by giving out candy canes to the kids, which of course Kirra loved. I wasn't sure this would be something Jaret would be into this year. When it was time to do the annual Christmas photo with Santa, Jaret was clear that he wouldn't be participating. It made my heart genuinely sad as I wasn't expecting that last year when he and Kirra sat on Santa's lap that it would be the last year he did it. Another sign that he is growing up.
We spent the night in Banff and stayed at The Rimrock. The kids were looking forward to a night of swimming but unfortunately their time was cut short when someone got sick in the pool and they had to close the pool down. However, they got a little time in and we enjoyed the time away. We had brunch at the hotel and just sat and enjoyed the mountain view. Memories in the making with my little family. And I am so grateful for how they appreciate it as well. As we had breakfast, Jaret looked out and said, "Isn't God's creation amazing?" Kirra agreed that it was beautiful and that she loves being in the mountains. I think part of it for her is the trip to the candy store that is always involved. She has a definite sweet tooth. Although, I never hear Jaret complaining about that tradition either.
We drove home after brunch in time to go to the Hitmen Game - Teddy Bear Toss. We bought tickets through the school and so 125 of us were sitting together. Mark, Shea, and the boys sat with us and the kids were ready with their stuffies. We did wonder, never having been at a game, just how our stuffies would make it to ice level since we were sitting in the upper section. But, once everyone started throwing their stuffies, we soon saw the complete raining down onto the ice with people catching and tossing the stuffies from above them. It was a sold out crowd and a record number of stuffies were collected at over 28 500. It was fun to watch. The kids had a great time but it was a late night. The game went into overtime and then a shootout. We were glad that the Hitmen pulled off a win.
We are grateful December is here and with it, the season of advent. We are so blessed to always reflect on this important season through devotions, prayer time, and our advent calendar. And tomorrow night, the kids already have their Christmas Concert. 'Tis the Season!
